Woolery Forbes Classic Mamma’s Jamaican Sorrel Punch Recipe with a Unique Twist
Sorrel is a beloved traditional drink from Jamaica and the wider West Indies, enjoyed both hot and cold. At its heart is the vibrant sorrel flower—also known as hibiscus—steeped for its tangy, refreshing flavour and striking ruby colour.
As with so many cherished recipes across the Caribbean, every family brings its own unique flair to sorrel. At Woolery Forbes, we’ve lovingly recreated our family’s special sorrel tea blend, inviting you to experience this time-honoured tradition in your own home. Like most Jamaican teas, our sorrel tea is more than just delicious—it’s a celebration of wellness, offering gentle health benefits while serving up a taste of relaxation and warmth. Whether you’re winding down with a soothing hot cup or cooling off with a chilled glass, Woolery Forbes Sorrel Tea is the perfect companion for your most relaxed moments.
Ingredients:
Classic Sorrel Punch:
1 3/4 liters of boiling water
1 pack of Mamma’s Jamaican Sorrel Tea
1 fresh lime / fresh lemon
Sweeten to taste (optional)
The Twist:
1 fresh orange
1 large pomegranate
2 cups Jamaican white rum OR 1/4 cup dark rum (for a richer flavour)
A few slice of fresh ginger
Instructions:
Make the Punch:
In a pot of boiling water add a large pack of Mamma’s Jamaican Sorrel Tea and the peel of the fresh lime/lemon then leave overnight.
Strain cooled mixture with a muslin cloth or a clean cotton cloth.
Add the juice of the fresh lime/lemon and stir well. Optional: add granulated sugar to taste.
The Twist:
In a pot of boiling water add a large pack of Mamma’s Jamaican Sorrel Tea, the peel of a fresh orange and the peel of the fresh lime/lemon then leave overnight.
Add a few slices of fresh ginger to the boiled water for a more spicy kick and leave it to brew overnight. You can remove the slices after a few minutes if you prefer a milder flavour.
Strain cooled mixture with a muslin cloth or a clean cotton cloth.
Add the juice of the fresh lime/lemon and stir well. Optional: add granulated sugar to taste. Add fresh orange peel to boiled water
Juice the orange and pomegranate.
When cooled add the orange pomegranate juice along with the rum for added depth and richness.
Flavour Adjustment:
Add your favourite flavoured rum to taste. Start with a few dashes and adjust according to your preference.
Grate fresh nutmeg over the top of the punch.
Serving:
Refrigerate the punch for a minimum of one hour to ensure the optimal blending of flavours.
Garnish with fresh mint leaves, pineapple slices, and orange slices. Serve in glasses over ice, ensuring each glass gets some of the garnish.
